Saving Water Water Meters Leaks In the Garden Links Email us

Can YOU save money with a water meter?

A property owner or tenant has the right to have a meter installed free of charge provided that it is possible to install and would not involve the Water Company in unreasonable expense.

Whether a Water Meter will save you money depends on the number of people in the household, the rateable value of the property and the life-style of it's occupants.

First step is to assess current water usage. The Table below give average water use for each activity:

IN THE KITCHEN Litres
One WashingMachine wash 75
Water efficient washing machine 50
Dishwasher once 35
Water efficient Dishwasher 20
Hand wash dishes once 6
1 dripping tap* (per day) 8
IN THE BATHROOM Litres
One Bath or PowerShower 75
One ordinary Shower 30
One Toilet flush 8
Once Brushing Teeth 10
1 dripping tap* (per day) 8
IN THE GARDEN Litres
1 hour of Hosing 1,135
1 hour of Sprinkler 900
Average Watering can 9
Hose-washing Car 680
1 dripping tap* (per day) 8
*8 litres of water costs 1p. The cost of a washer would be recouped in under 4 weeks!

TIP: Most Water Companies charge consumers for Rainwater discharge into their Main Drains, by default. If your property uses soak-aways instead, ask your Water Company to reduce you bill to reflect that fact.

Second Step: Metered water costs approximately one eighth of a penny per litre. The average water-supply element for a Water Bill in the UK is £141. Compare your potential water metering cost with this figure, or to gain a more precise figure compare it to your own current water bill.
