Yorkshire Water manage the collection, treatment and distribution of water, supplying around 1.24 billion litres of drinking water each day through a grid system of more than 700 water and sewage treatment works, 120 reservoirs and 40,000 miles of water and sewerage mains. They were voted the Best Utility Company of the Year in 2004, ahead of all the UK's water, electricity, gas and telecomms companies. The latest figures published by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) for Yorkshire Water show that 99.95% of water samples in 2005 comply with some of the most stringent health related standards in the world. An investment programme worth nearly £1.5 billion has been put in place to safeguard Yorkshire's water and sewerage infrastructure whilst at the same time making further efficiencies to keep prices as low as possible for customers. An average of £750 per household is being spent to maintain and upgrade pipes and works to reduce the risk of bursts, low water pressure, incidents of discolouration, sewer flooding and odour problems.
