Southern Water is responsible for delivering fresh water to around one million households in the South East of England and also treats and recycles dirty water from nearly two million households. Over 100 water supply works collect and clean water before it is used, and 390 wastewater treatment works treat the water so that it can be returned to the environment. Their pipe network consists of 13,300 km of water mains. Waste water sludge is recycled for use in agriculture. Southern Water provides water supply and wastewater treatment services across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. it also provides wastewater treatment only for other water companies. Being in a Chalk and limestone catchment area, this leads to hard water being supplied, which can lead to limescale or scum in water, particularly when it is boiled. There is no UK or European standard set for the hardness of drinking water. Southern Water does not soften water at any of its treatment works as a preference for hard or soft water is a very personal choice, often depending on the type of water to which you are used.
