Anglian Water is one of the leading
providers of water and wastewater services in the UK and is part of the
AWG Plc group. It is located in the east of England and serves the needs
of around six million industrial, commercial and domestic customers.
Geographically
it is the largest water company within England and Wales and serves 2.6
million properties across East Anglia and the East Midlands, an area of
some 27,500 square kilometres, stretching from the Humber in the north
to the Thames in the south, from Daventry in the west across to the east
coast.
Supplies an average of 1,200 million litres of water per day, treated
at over 140 water treatment works and supplied through 36,000 kilometres
of water mains. Water supplies in the region are taken from three types
of sources, namely direct from rivers, reservoirs and from groundwater.
Direct abstraction from rivers accounts for only five per cent of the
water supplied. Most have buffer storage before treatment and all are
able to use alternative supplies.
Nearly half the water supplied comes from large storage reservoirs. The
prime purpose of these reservoirs is to provide a water resource for
public water supply by storing surplus flows in the autumn and winter
months. In this way we maintain secure water supplies throughout the
year. Many of these reservoirs, for example Rutland Water and Grafham
Water, are best known for their amenity and nature conservation use, and
Anglian Water strive to maintain and enhance these facilities to benefit
the environment and their customers. Further information on these
reservoirs can be found on their
website. The remaining water supplies are abstracted from
seven major underground sources (aquifers) via over 450 boreholes. The
major aquifer is chalk, with locally important supplies coming from
limestones and sandstones. Groundwater is typically of excellent quality
and is characterised by the hydrogeology and mineralogy of the aquifer.
Environment Anglian Water is geographically the largest of the
10 regional water and wastewater companies in England and Wales. Anglian
Water covers a region of approximately 27,500km2 and has: 3,000km of
coastline with beaches and estuaries the UKs only wetland national
park the Norfolk Broads over 750 sites of special scientific
interest numerous endangered species.
